Content: History of hypertext, markup languages, etc. leading up to the Web. Evolving Web protocols, formats and computation paradigms such as HTTP, XML and Web Services. Novel application domains enabled by the Web and societal issues.

Workload: Individual research paper, individual or group project, individual presentation, class participation. Students should plan to attend class on a regular basis (attendance is taken via a signin sheet).

Prerequisites: At least one COMS W41xx or COMS E61xx course and/or COMS W4444, or the instructor's permission. Strongly recommended: COMS W4111. This course is primarily intended for Computer Science graduate students, but undergraduates and non-majors are very welcome.

Special option for "non-technical" students: Non-technical (humanities, social sciences, arts, education, business, etc.) graduate and upper-level undergraduate students are very welcome to attend the class (without any prerequisites), but should register instead for 3 points of COMS W3998-014 (for undergraduates) or COMS W4901-014 (for graduate students). The workload for non-technical students will be a "less technical" research paper investigating, e.g., a social policy issue, and conduct of a "user study" project of a some Web-based technology, potentially but not necessarily in conjunction with a technical programming project. There is no difference in the presentation and participation requirements. Note: all CS and most EE, IEOR or DBMI students should enroll in the regular technical version. Contact the instructor to further information and to obtain any needed registration signatures for this option.
